Baby Boomer names (born 1946–1964)

100 names · 50 girls · 50 boys · records through 2025

The boom years produced more births than any span before them, so these totals are the largest in the entire record — a Boomer name was given on a scale later generations never matched.

This guide has 100 names: 50 girl names and 50 boy names. Names ranked in the national top-100 in any year from 1946 to 1964. The total beside each name counts the births of the years it made that top 100 — a name ranked lower in a given year contributes nothing for it. Built from US Social Security birth records through 2025. Tap + beside any name to keep it on your shortlist as you read.

Before the names

The girls' #1 changed hands for the first time in sixty years: Linda took it in 1947, held it through 1952, and handed it back to Mary. The boys ran James, then Robert, then Michael — who was about to begin the longest reign in the data.

Because the cohort is so large and still largely alive, these names dominate the count of living Americans today. Several sit at the very top of that list while ranking nowhere near it among newborns.
