The story of Sharon
The plain in question was not the pleasant place the name suggests. Before it was drained in the modern period, the Sharon was heavy red sand and swamp, laced with malarial marsh and covered in scrub oak, and armies and traders went around it rather than through it. The coastal road ran along its edge for that reason. What made the name attractive was never the ground but a single verse of poetry about a flower, and the flower in that verse cannot be identified either. A great many names arrive this way: through one memorable line, detached from the thing it describes.
Meaning
the plain
The Hebrew term names a landscape rather than describing a person. It is used with the definite article in the source text, which is to say it means the plain, a specific one.

The Frances test
Every popular name lives one long story — a climb, a peak, a slow settling back. Sharon's later chapters haven't been written yet, so we borrowed them: Frances climbed just as high around 1918, and its whole arc is on record. Line the two peaks up, and Frances's path sketches the road Sharon is walking now.
