Juno was the name of the Roman queen of the gods, and Roman writers themselves tied the month of June to her. It is two clean syllables, spelled exactly as it sounds, with a long open first vowel and a rounded finish — a word that has been said aloud for well over two thousand years and has only lately been given to children.

The story of Juno
Juno was one of the central deities of Roman state religion, the wife of Jupiter and, in her many titles, a guardian of women, marriage and childbirth. Her temple on the Capitoline hill, Juno Moneta, housed the Roman mint — which is why the English word "money" traces back through her epithet. For most of its life the word was a divine title rather than a name for a person; it reached modern given-name use through literature and film, including Seán O'Casey's 1924 play "Juno and the Paycock" and the 2007 film "Juno." NASA's Jupiter probe, launched in 2011, carries the name too, keeping the old pairing intact.
Meaningscholars disagree
Most likely connected to a root meaning "young" or "vital force"
Latin Iuno has no settled etymology. The strongest reading links it to the same Indo-European root as Latin iuvenis, "young," understood as youthful vital force; other scholars have proposed a connection to words for the moon or for the sky-god's consort. Nobody has closed the question, and the Romans themselves did not agree.

The Simran test
Every popular name lives one long story — a climb, a peak, a slow settling back. Juno's later chapters haven't been written yet, so we borrowed them: Simran climbed just as high around 2001, and its whole arc is on record. Line the two peaks up, and Simran's path sketches the road Juno is walking now.
Juno is climbing fast right now. Steep climbs tend to come with steep descents — the quicker a name arrives, the more firmly it belongs to its moment.

The trade-off
- Spelled the way it sounds, and short enough to fit any form, signature or nametag without shortening.
- A documented record stretching back to Roman state religion, so the name is ancient even though its use for children is recent.
- Recognizable in English, Spanish, Portuguese and French without respelling.
- Ready-made affectionate forms in Junie and June, both already in real use.
- Rare enough that a child is unlikely to share it in a classroom, while still being instantly readable to strangers.
- For many adults the first association is the 2007 film about a pregnant teenager. It is a warmly regarded film, but expect it to be mentioned, particularly by people who were young when it came out.
- In Roman myth Juno is a goddess of marriage and childbirth, and also famously jealous and vengeful toward Jupiter's other children. Some parents like the whole picture; others find the myth heavier than they expected.
- It gets mixed up in writing with June and with Juneau, the Alaskan city, so a spelling correction now and then is likely.
- The name is climbing quickly and is heard most among young children, so it will read as distinctly of this moment to people who track such things.
