Goddess and muse names

Before the names

Every name below comes from goddess or muse lore and appears in current birth records, with its real rank.

The freshness is measurable. Persephone did not enter the US records at all until 1962; Freya arrived in 1931 and waited ninety years for her moment; Athena charted quietly for a century before climbing into the top-110 within the last decade. Ancient in origin, these are effectively new names in American use — familiar to every reader, worn by almost no one's grandmother.

The wave has clear leaders and a long tail. Aurora, Penelope and Luna have carried the mythological revival into the top-30, while Phoebe and Daphne stand at their highest ranks ever recorded this year. Behind them the tail runs deep and genuinely rare: Persephone, Artemis, Juno and Gaia all chart, none of them anywhere near common.

Two names here carry a different history: Diana peaked in 1946 and Cassandra in 1990, both mainstream American names of their own eras now resting. They are goddess names with a twentieth-century past — which changes how they read at introductions, and the peak year beside each one tells you exactly which kind you are holding.

This page is a girls' list by construction — the goddesses and muses — and the records keep it one. The male half of the pantheon (Apollo, Atlas, Achilles and company) has its own guide: hero and god names for boys.
