Gaia
Feminine · Greek roots · “Earth”
Gaia is the oldest name in Greek myth — the earth herself, first of the primordial beings in Hesiod's Theogony, written down some seven centuries before the common era. In Italy it has been a living, ordinary girl's name for generations, said GAH-yah over the dinner table. Two syllables, four letters, an open vowel at each end.

The story of Gaia
The Greek Gaia is the earth in the literal sense: the word, the goddess, and the ground underfoot were the same thing, and in Hesiod's account of the beginning she comes before nearly everything else. Rome kept her as Gaea in Latin verse, while quite separately Roman families used Gaia as the standard feminine of the praenomen Gaius — common enough that it appears in the old wedding formula recorded by Roman writers. Italian carried that everyday Gaia forward without a break, and it remains in regular use there. English-speaking parents came to the name later and largely by the mythological door, helped along by the Gaia hypothesis, the 1970s idea of the planet as a single self-regulating system, which put the old name back into ordinary conversation.

Earth
In Greek, gaia is simply the word for earth or land, and that is the reading behind the goddess. The modern Italian name arrives by a second road: from the Roman feminine praenomen Gaia, the counterpart of Gaius, whose own origin is not established — Latin writers linked it to gaudium, joy, though that connection is traditional rather than proven. Both roads end at the same spelling.

The Melynda test
Every popular name lives one long story — a climb, a peak, a slow settling back. Gaia's later chapters haven't been written yet, so we borrowed them: Melynda climbed just as high around 1973, and its whole arc is on record. Line the two peaks up, and Melynda's path sketches the road Gaia is walking now.
Gaia sits in the calm middle of the cycle — neither chasing a wave nor sliding off one. Middle-of-the-cycle names age slowly and predictably.

The trade-off
- Four letters, two syllables, spelled the way most people will guess once they have heard it.
- A documented record stretching from archaic Greek poetry to present-day Italian birth registers — an unbroken line, not a revival.
- Works in Italian, French, Spanish and English with at most an accent mark changing.
- Distinctive in an American classroom without being unfamiliar: most adults recognize the name even if they have not met one.
- Two accepted English pronunciations, GUY-uh and GAY-uh, plus the Italian GAH-yah. She will correct people, politely, for life — not a crisis, but a permanent small task.
- The name carries a strong environmental and New Age association through the Gaia hypothesis and decades of eco-branding. Some hear the goddess, some hear a wellness studio.
- It is rare enough here that she will likely be explaining it rather than sharing it, and it sits close to Kaia, Maia and Gaya in the ear, so expect occasional mix-ups.
