Thalia comes from the Greek verb for blooming, and the Greeks gave the name to two of their most cheerful figures: the Muse of comedy, and one of the three Graces. It has been written in Greek, Latin, Spanish and English without ever changing its shape much — three vowels and a soft consonant, easy to say slowly. It has been on American records since the nineteenth century, and after a long quiet stretch it is being handed to babies again.

How old is the name Thalia?

Thalia first appears in US birth records in 1885 — 140 years ago. The typical Thalia alive today was born around 2005, making them about 20 years old. About 15,000 people named Thalia are estimated to be alive in the US today.

When was the name Thalia most popular?

Thalia peaked in 1993, reaching #363 nationally. Today it ranks #647, 284 places below that high. See the whole 1993 chart.

Where it comes from

The story of Thalia

In Greek myth the name belongs to two figures at once: Thaleia, the Muse of comedy and idyllic poetry, and Thaleia, one of the three Charites or Graces. Both readings turn on the same idea of flourishing, and both kept the name alive through Roman writers, who spelled it Thalia in Latin. From there it passed into European learning and stayed a name of books and theaters for centuries before becoming an ordinary given name. In the United States it has been in continuous, quiet use since the nineteenth century, and it travels easily between English and Spanish, where it appears as Talía — which is part of why it shows up most strongly in California, Texas and Florida.

The trade-off

Practical strengths
  • Meaning is documented and uncontested: 'blooming', from a Greek verb.
  • Works in English and Spanish with only an accent's difference — Thalia and Talía are the same name.
  • A written record stretching from Greek myth through Latin literature to modern birth registers.
  • Several natural short forms already in use: Lia, Tali, Tally.
  • Rare enough in American classrooms that a child is unlikely to share it, without being unfamiliar to adults.
What to consider
  • The pronunciation genuinely varies — THAH-lee-uh, thuh-LEE-uh and tah-LEE-ah all exist. A Thalia will spend her life gently correcting people, or deciding not to.
  • The 'th' is often dropped in writing: expect Talia and Tahlia as recurring misspellings, and some confusion with Dahlia and with Talia as a short form of Natalia.
  • It is on the way back up rather than settled, which means she may meet more Thalias among younger children than among her own age group.
