Adina has been on the American record from the very first lists, quietly, without ever crowding a classroom. It appears in the Hebrew Bible, sits at the center of Donizetti's L'elisir d'amore as the heroine Adina, and is an everyday name in Romania — three quite different rooms for one four-syllable word. Said aloud it opens and closes on the same soft vowel, with the weight in the middle.

Where it comes from

The story of Adina

The Hebrew Adina appears in the First Book of Chronicles, where it belongs to a man — Adina son of Shiza, a Reubenite among David's fighters. The name later settled as a feminine one in Hebrew usage, with Adin serving as the masculine counterpart, and it traveled with Jewish families to Europe and then to the United States, which is why it has been present in American records from the earliest ones onward. On a separate track, Romanian took Adina as a short form of Adelina and made it a name of its own. Donizetti's 1832 comic opera L'elisir d'amore gave it a third life on the stage, where Adina is the landowner the whole plot revolves around.

Hebrew: delicate, gentle

Two roads meet at this spelling. The Hebrew name comes from the root ʿadin, 'delicate, gentle' — that reading is well established. In Romanian, where Adina is long familiar, it is generally treated instead as a short form of Adelina, which traces back to Germanic adal, 'noble'. Both are genuine; which one applies depends on the family.

The common American pronunciation puts the stress on the middle syllable. Hebrew and Romanian speakers open with a fuller first vowel — ah-DEE-nah — and both versions travel fine in the same family.

The trade-off

Practical strengths
  • Present in American records from the earliest ones and never absent since — long familiarity without ever being a crowd name.
  • At home in Hebrew, Romanian, Italian and English, so it crosses borders without needing to be changed.
  • Ready-made short forms in real use: Adi and Dina, both of which also work as full names.
  • Four letters of vowel-consonant alternation that most English speakers read correctly on sight, even if the stress needs one correction.
What to consider
  • It sits close to Adena, Adinah, Adrina and Adaline, so expect to spell it out and to correct the occasional guess.
  • Stress placement genuinely varies — uh-DEE-nuh in American English, ah-DEE-nah in Hebrew and Romanian. Worth deciding which one you will offer first.
  • Anyone who looks the name up in a biblical concordance finds a man: Adina son of Shiza, one of David's warriors. The feminine use is later and thoroughly settled.
  • Being rare means being explained. On the other hand, a child with this name will mostly not be sharing it with anyone in the room.
