The story of Brenda
The name came south out of Shetland by way of a novel. Walter Scott spent a summer touring the northern isles with the lighthouse commissioners, took notes on everything, and built a book out of them in which two sisters carry local Norse names — one of them this one. Shetland had kept Norse naming long after mainland Scotland had abandoned it, so the name he picked up there was genuinely old rather than invented for the book. The novel was widely read, the name traveled with it, and within a couple of generations it was in use across Britain and America by people who had never been within five hundred miles of the islands it came from.
