The story of Eloisa
Héloïse was a scholar of Latin, Greek and Hebrew who studied under Peter Abelard in Paris, bore his child, was separated from him, and became an abbess; their surviving correspondence is a foundation text of medieval letters. The name passed into Spanish and Italian as Eloisa, and appears in American records rising through the 2010s.
Meaningscholars disagree
famous warrior; healthy
Usually read through the Germanic Helewidis — heil, 'healthy' or 'whole', and wid, 'wide'. A second and commoner popular account connects it to Louise, from hlud, 'famous', and wig, 'war'. The two names converged in French use and the origin is genuinely unsettled.

The Aggie test
Every popular name lives one long story — a climb, a peak, a slow settling back. Eloisa's later chapters haven't been written yet, so we borrowed them: Aggie climbed just as high around 1900, and its whole arc is on record. Line the two peaks up, and Aggie's path sketches the road Eloisa is walking now.
Eloisa is on its second act. Revived names age gently: the generation that wore them first is far enough away that the name feels classic rather than dated.

The trade-off
- One of the most remarkable documented women of the twelfth century stands behind it.
- It is standard in Spanish and Italian with only an accent's difference.
- Four syllables of open vowels, which carries unusually well.
- The origin is genuinely split between two Germanic compounds.
- Eloise is much the commoner English form.
- The accent placement matters in Spanish and is usually dropped in American records.
