Aggie
Feminine · “chaste”
Aggie is overwhelmingly a girls’ name — 1,490 girls against 30 boys since 1880.
Saint Agnes is shown with a lamb, and the lamb is a mistake. Her Greek name comes from hagnos, meaning chaste or holy; Latin speakers heard agnus, a lamb, and the iconography followed — so a piece of medieval art history rests on a misheard vowel. Aggie is the short form, and it serves Agatha and Augusta as readily as it serves Agnes.

The story of Aggie
Agnes was a Roman girl martyred young, and her cult was one of the largest in Christendom; the name was among the most-given in medieval England. Agatha and Augusta are unrelated names that shorten the same way, and Aggie serves all three — which is why a woman called Aggie in 1900 could have any of them on her certificate. American records show it from 1881, peaking in 1900, and it is given to daughters and to a small number of sons.
Meaning
chaste, holy
From the Greek hagnos, pure or chaste, which is where Agnes comes from. The Latin agnus, a lamb, is a different word that happens to sound the same, and the confusion is medieval rather than modern — lambs are still blessed at Saint Agnes's church in Rome every January and their wool used for archbishops' vestments.
