Leala
Feminine
Leala is a small, symmetrical name from a period that liked them. It sits among Leila, Lelia, Lena and Leola, all in American use at the same time, and it may be a version of any of them. There is also an old word it lands on exactly: leal, which in Scots and older English means loyal, and which survives in a phrase about the land of the faithful.

The story of Leala
American naming in the eighteen-hundreds produced a large number of short, vowel-heavy women's names that look invented and often were — Ola, Ova, Zula, Leola, Leala. They were built from a small stock of syllables and were not expected to have etymologies; the point was the sound. Some of them turned out to coincide with real words in other languages, which later readers have taken for descent. Leala is one of those. The coincidence with leal is real and pleasing, and it is a coincidence unless a particular family says otherwise.

Not established
No origin is documented. Three are plausible. Leal is a genuine Scots and archaic English word for loyal or true, from the same French root as loyal itself, and it was still in literary use when this name appears. Leila is Arabic layla, night, and was widely borrowed into English through nineteenth-century poetry. And the name may simply have been assembled from the syllables American families were using at the time. The record does not choose, and neither should anyone reading it.
Pronouncing Leala
LEE-uh-luh
LEE-uh-luh, three syllables, stress at the front. Some say lay-AH-luh, giving the first vowel the other value and moving the weight, and both are heard. The spelling is short enough to be read either way and offers no guidance.

The trade-off
- Five letters, all vowely and soft, with nothing silent and nothing doubled.
- Lea and Lala are both available and they sit in quite different registers.
- The symmetry of the spelling makes it easy to remember once seen.
- The first vowel can be read two ways, and the name will be said both until it is corrected.
- Leila, Lelia and Leola are all close enough to be substituted, and all are better known.
- There is no documented origin, so the leal connection is an offer rather than a fact and should be presented as one.
