Martie
Feminine · “lady”
Martie is given to both — 1,221 girls and 221 boys since 1880. See other names given to both
Martie can be short for two different names that both begin the same way. Martha is Aramaic and means the lady of the house — a title, straightforwardly, and one of the few names in the Gospels that is not Hebrew. Martina comes from Martinus and belongs to Mars. The spelling picks neither, and in a great many households it was never short for anything.

The story of Martie
Martha is the sister of Mary and Lazarus in the Gospel of John, and she is the one busy in the kitchen while her sister listens — a detail that has attached itself to the name for two thousand years. It came into English with the Reformation, as Hebrew and Aramaic names generally did, and to America with it. Martie belongs to a later and more American habit: taking the front of a name, adding -ie, and entering the result on a birth certificate. That produced Bobbie, Willie, Jackie and Martie in the same decades, and it produced them for daughters as often as for sons.
Meaningscholars disagree
lady; mistress of the house
Aramaic marta is the feminine of mar, lord, and means the lady or mistress — the same construction English has in landlord and landlady. That is settled for Martha. The other road leads to Martina, the feminine of Martinus, itself built on the god's name, and it means something quite different. Which of the two a particular Martie descends from is a family fact that the spelling does not record, and often there was no long name at all.

The trade-off
- Two long names are available behind it, and they come from two different languages.
- Mart works as a short form and belongs to neither sex in particular.
- The sound is completely familiar and no one has ever hesitated over it.
- Marty is the spelling most people default to, and it reads as a man's name, so this one gets corrected in both directions.
- It reads as a nickname on a document, and no formal version comes with it unless the family supplies one.
- It is recorded for boys too, so on a list it settles nothing about which child is meant.
