The story of Belva
Belva Lockwood was admitted to the bar in Washington in 1873, lobbied Congress until it passed a law permitting women to argue before the Supreme Court, and became the first to do so in 1880. She ran for president twice in the 1880s, when women in almost every state could not vote for her. The name appears in American registers through those decades and peaked around 1885, which is unlikely to be a coincidence.
Meaningscholars disagree
beautiful
No documented origin. The usual reading treats it as a coinage on the Latin bella or the French belle, 'beautiful', with an ending borrowed from Alva or Elva. It has also been read as a form of the Latin belua or of a place name. None of these is established; the name appears in nineteenth-century American records already formed.

The trade-off
- It carries a documented and genuinely remarkable American bearer.
- Two firm syllables that stand up well against a long surname.
- It is genuinely rare while being entirely traditional in the registers.
- The 'beautiful' reading is a plausible reconstruction rather than a documented etymology.
- It is strongly period-coded to the late nineteenth century.
