Zona
Feminine · “belt”
Zona was a belt before it was an area. Greek zone means a girdle — the thing worn round the waist — and Latin took it as zona with the same sense; the geographic meaning came much later, from the bands of climate that circle the earth. The name is also the back half of Arizona, which is where it turns up most.

The story of Zona
American families of the nineteenth century took names from the map with enthusiasm, and territory names were among the most used — Nevada, Dakota, Montana, Arizona. Clipping a long place name to its last two syllables was routine at the time, so Zona from Arizona is an entirely ordinary formation. The classical word ran in parallel through the same period, familiar to anyone with a schoolroom Latin book. The name's concentration in the Southwest is the strongest single clue about which road most families took.

belt; girdle
Greek zone is a belt or girdle, from a verb meaning to gird, and Latin zona kept it. Ancient geographers used the word for the bands of the earth between the tropics and the poles, which is how English got zone. Whether an American Zona descends from the classical word or is simply the tail of Arizona is not recoverable — and Arizona's own name is separately argued, with a Basque phrase and an O'odham place name both proposed and neither settled.

The trade-off
- Four letters and two syllables, said correctly by everyone on first sight.
- It has a documented classical word behind it as well as a place name.
- A Z at the front is unusual and gives a very short name something distinctive to work with.
- The English word zone is close enough that the connection gets made, and it is a rather clinical word.
- Zora, Zola and Mona are all near neighbors and all more familiar, so the name gets substituted.
- It belongs firmly to an earlier American century and has not come back into circulation.
