Each of these names entered the US charts only recently — many didn't exist at all when today's parents were born. Expect imports from other cultures, new coinages, and creative respellings that took on a life of their own.

"New" here has a precise meaning: the name either has no record before roughly the last decade, or it charted for the first time in that window. The Social Security data only counts a name once at least five babies received it in a year, so a name arriving on this list has already cleared a small threshold of real use. Nothing here is hypothetical.

A new name asks something of its owner that an old one does not. It will be spelled back at them wrongly, and there is no reference point — no saint, no president, no grandmother — to anchor it. Some families consider that a cost; others consider it the entire point, and the data cannot tell you which you are.

What the data can tell you is trajectory. Some names on this list arrived and stalled; others are climbing steeply, which means the child born this year may share it with several classmates by the time they start school. The rank beside each name is where it stands today, not where it is heading.
