Dutton
Masculine · Old English roots
Dutton is overwhelmingly a boys’ name — 1,456 boys against 45 girls since 1880.
Dutton began as English ground — small settlements in Cheshire and Lancashire whose names were written down in medieval records long before anyone thought of them as a family name. It moves in the mouth like Colton and Weston, that steady two-beat -ton ending American parents have been drawn to for generations, and it spells itself the moment it is said aloud.

The story of Dutton
Dutton is a place before it is a person: villages and townships of that name in Cheshire and Lancashire, recorded in the Middle Ages, gave their name to the families who held or came from them. As a surname it spread through northern England and then across the Atlantic, where it settled into ordinary American use — it is the Dutton of the New York publishing house founded by E. P. Dutton in the nineteenth century. Its life as a first name is very recent and traceable: the neo-Western series Yellowstone, which arrived in the late 2010s, built its story around a ranching family named Dutton, and American parents began putting the surname in the first slot almost immediately.
Meaningscholars disagree
either "Dudda's farmstead" or "farmstead by the hill"
Both readings come from Old English tūn, "farmstead, enclosure, settlement." The first element is where scholars divide: the personal name Dudda for the Cheshire Dutton, and dūn, "hill" or "down," for the Lancashire one. Since the surname arose separately in several places, both explanations are correct for different families.

The Lorenza test
Every popular name lives one long story — a climb, a peak, a slow settling back. Dutton's later chapters haven't been written yet, so we borrowed them: Lorenza climbed just as high around 1901, and its whole arc is on record. Line the two peaks up, and Lorenza's path sketches the road Dutton is walking now.
Dutton is climbing fast right now. Steep climbs tend to come with steep descents — the quicker a name arrives, the more firmly it belongs to its moment.

The trade-off
- A spelling most Americans already recognize as a surname, so it is written correctly from hearing it once — no spelling out at the pharmacy counter.
- Sits inside a pattern parents and teachers already know: the same -ton ending as Colton, Weston and Payton, so it sounds settled rather than invented.
- A documented record stretching back to medieval English place names, which gives a very new first name real depth to stand on.
- Distinctive enough that a child will almost certainly never share it in a classroom.
- One clear pronunciation, two clean syllables, and it pairs easily with most middle names.
- The association with Yellowstone is strong and specific right now, and adults will name the show when they hear it. That connection may fade, or may date the name to a particular stretch of years the way Kayla or Dawson do.
- Almost every Dutton alive is a small child, so there is no older generation of bearers to make it feel lived-in yet. Your family may be the ones who make it ordinary.
- It reads as a last name first, which means occasional confusion on forms and roll calls — and no established nickname waiting if your child ever wants a shorter option beyond Dutch.
