Asaiah

Asaiah is given to both — 2,075 boys and 118 girls since 1880. See other names given to both
Asaiah is one of the smaller names in the Hebrew Bible — a Levite singer, a Simeonite chieftain, and an officer sent by King Josiah to consult the prophetess Huldah. The King James translators spelled it two ways in two different books, Asaiah and Asahiah, which tells you the name has been quietly negotiating its own spelling for four hundred years. In the mouth it runs long and open, three unhurried syllables ending on the same -iah that closes Isaiah, Josiah and Jeremiah.
How old is the name Asaiah?
Asaiah first appears in US birth records in 1996 — 29 years ago. The typical Asaiah is a kid of about 3 — this name's wave is very recent. About 2,100 people named Asaiah are estimated to be alive in the US today.

The story of Asaiah
The name is Hebrew, written עֲשָׂיָה, and belongs to several men in the Hebrew Bible: a Levite among the singers appointed for the ark, a leader of the tribe of Simeon, and a servant of King Josiah sent to inquire of the prophetess Huldah after the book of the law was found in the temple. English Bibles carried it forward unevenly — the King James Version prints Asahiah in Second Kings and Asaiah in First Chronicles, for the same Hebrew name. It never became a common English given name in the way Isaiah or Josiah did, and stayed largely a name read rather than spoken. Its American use is recent, and it arrives alongside the broader revival of long Old Testament boys' names ending in -iah.
Meaning
"Yahweh has made" or "made by the Lord"

Spellings are grouped by a fixed rule that folds interchangeable English spellings of one sound (ck/k, ph/f, x/ks, a non-initial y for i) and keeps vowels apart, so Sean and Shawn stay separate names. It errs towards splitting: a family here is never larger than the truth. SSA national data, 2025. Method

The Jerimiah test
Every popular name lives one long story — a climb, a peak, a slow settling back. Asaiah's later chapters haven't been written yet, so we borrowed them: Jerimiah climbed just as high around 1977, and its whole arc is on record. Line the two peaks up, and Jerimiah's path sketches the road Asaiah is walking now.
Asaiah is climbing fast right now. Steep climbs tend to come with steep descents — the quicker a name arrives, the more firmly it belongs to its moment.

The trade-off
- A genuine Old Testament name with a documented meaning, not a modern coinage — the record goes back to the Hebrew scriptures.
- Asa works as a ready-made short form and stands on its own as a name people already know how to spell.
- Rides the familiar -iah pattern of Isaiah and Josiah, so listeners rarely need the sound explained, only the spelling.
- Rare enough that a child is unlikely to share it with a classmate, while still sounding entirely at home among his peers.
- It will be heard as Isaiah constantly — on the phone, at the doctor's office, in roll call. Expect to spell it out and correct it for life, kindly and often.
- Two pronunciations circulate, uh-SAY-uh and uh-ZY-uh. Neither is wrong, but the family has to pick one and repeat it.
- The American wave is very new, so nearly everyone carrying the name right now is a young child. There is no adult version of this name in the culture yet to point to — he will be among the first.
