From Laurentius to Lorenza
The story of Lorenza
The name's weight in Italy comes from one family. Lorenzo de' Medici ran Florence for over twenty years without ever holding an office that said so, paid for a good part of the Renaissance out of a bank he was steadily mismanaging, wrote poetry that is still anthologised, and was called il Magnifico in his own lifetime — a title that then meant something closer to generous than to grand. Florence named a great many sons after him and, in the ordinary Italian way, a great many daughters too. Lorenza traveled to America with Italian and Spanish-speaking families, and it is recorded here from very early in the count.

Fashion outlook
Lorenza sits outside the current charts, and that is its own kind of answer: naming cycles can only date the names they carried up. A name this rare has no decade stamped on it — it cannot go out of fashion, because it was never in.

The trade-off

- Renza and Enza are real Italian short forms rather than invented ones.
- The z is said two different ways depending on which language the speaker is thinking in.
- The spelling is recorded for boys as well as girls in the United States.
- English speakers will assume it is a feminine invention rather than an ordinary Italian name.
