Logan
Masculine · Scottish Gaelic roots · “little hollow”
Logan is given to both — 387,999 boys and 31,838 girls since 1880. See Logan as a girl nameSee other names given to both
Logan began as a place in Ayrshire — a hollow in the Scottish landscape — then became the surname of the people from it, then traveled with them to Ulster, Canada and the United States before anyone thought to give it to a baby as a first name. It is two clean syllables that nobody has to spell twice, and it has been climbing and settling in English-speaking countries for well over a century.

The story of Logan
The oldest Logan is a piece of ground: a hollow in Ayrshire in southwest Scotland, whose name gave the local family theirs. Scottish and Ulster-Scots families carried the surname across the Atlantic, where it stuck to the map as well as to people — Mount Logan in the Yukon, Boston's Logan airport, the town of Logan, Utah. Like Douglas, Ross and Craig before it, the surname eventually slipped forward into first-name position, and it has been on American records since the nineteenth century. It still ranks in Canada, Scotland and England & Wales, which is unusual: most surname-first-names stay on one side of the ocean.

The Joseph test
Every popular name lives one long story — a climb, a peak, a slow settling back. Logan's later chapters haven't been written yet, so we borrowed them: Joseph climbed just as high around 1912, and its whole arc is on record. Line the two peaks up, and Joseph's path sketches the road Logan is walking now.

The trade-off
- Spelled the way it sounds and known everywhere in the English-speaking world — little risk of lifelong correcting.
- Charts in Canada, Scotland and England & Wales as well as the US, so it travels without translation.
- Short and complete on its own; it needs no nickname, though Lo and Logie are there if wanted.
- Reads as neither childish nor stuffy — it sits comfortably on a kindergarten cubby and a business card alike.
- A documented line from a Scottish place name through a family surname to a given name, unbroken and traceable.
- It reads male to most people on paper. A girl named Logan will meet forms and rosters that assume otherwise — manageable, but worth knowing in advance.
- The name rose sharply and is now easing back, so it clusters heavily around people in their teens and twenties. It may sound of a particular moment rather than timeless for a while.
- Very little to shorten. If you like a long name with a private nickname inside it, Logan gives you almost nothing to work with.
