Wesley
Masculine · Old English roots · “West meadow”
Wesley is overwhelmingly a boys’ name — 247,713 boys against 3,256 girls since 1880. See Wesley as a girl name
Wesley started as a description of a patch of land — a meadow to the west — became the name of villages, then of the families who came from them. It crossed from surname to first name in the English-speaking world largely through admiration for the eighteenth-century preacher John Wesley, whose followers named sons after him. Centuries later it is spoken almost exactly as it always was, with the same short form folded inside it: Wes.

The story of Wesley
The name comes from English places called Westley or Wesley, named for lying west of somewhere else. Families who moved away from those settlements carried the place name with them as a surname, which is how it was still working in the seventeenth century. Its life as a first name owes most to John Wesley, the eighteenth-century Anglican clergyman whose preaching founded Methodism; as Methodist congregations spread through Britain and then across the American South and Midwest, parents began giving the surname to sons outright. From there it traveled further than its Old English roots would suggest, and now turns up unaltered in the Netherlands, Belgium, France and Brazil.
Meaning

The Philip test
Every popular name lives one long story — a climb, a peak, a slow settling back. Wesley's later chapters haven't been written yet, so we borrowed them: Philip climbed just as high around 1941, and its whole arc is on record. Line the two peaks up, and Philip's path sketches the road Wesley is walking now.

The trade-off
- Comes with Wes ready-made — a one-syllable short form that has been in use as long as the name has, and stands on its own as a name too.
- Spelled the way it sounds for an American ear, and short enough to fit any form, jersey or signature.
- Used unchanged in Dutch, French and Brazilian Portuguese, so it needs no translation abroad.
- A long, unbroken record in English-speaking countries rather than a recent coinage, and still charting in Canada as well as the US.
- The Methodist connection is the reason the name exists as a first name, and some families will hear it clearly. Others will hear nothing at all — worth knowing which side yours is on.
- Westley and Wesly both exist, so expect the occasional wrong spelling and the occasional soft-s pronunciation.
- It has been climbing rather than sitting still, so a child named Wesley now may meet more namesakes over the years than the present picture suggests.
