Names in use since the records began

100 names · 50 girls · 50 boys · records through 2025

The US records open in 1880. These names were there on the first page and are still being given now, which is the longest documented run any American name can claim.

This guide has 100 names: 50 girl names and 50 boy names. Names first recorded in 1880, the earliest year in the data, and still ranked in the latest year — ordered by today's rank. Built from US Social Security birth records through 2025. Tap + beside any name to keep it on your shortlist as you read.

Before the names

It is a stricter test than it sounds. A name that arrived later and became enormous does not qualify; only the ones that were already there, and still are.

The list runs from names in today's top ten to names now given a few dozen times a year. What unites them is durability rather than fashion — nothing here ever needed reviving, because it never fully went away.

Every rank and count here is published by the US Social Security Administration and refreshed each year when the new figures land. The method is stated at the top of this page.
