Vivian was a man's name for most of its history. It comes from the Latin for living, it belonged to bishops and saints, and English used it for boys through the Middle Ages without anyone thinking twice. What moved it is literature: the enchantress who traps Merlin is called Vivien in the Arthurian romances, and when Tennyson gave her a poem of her own in the nineteenth century, the name changed sides.

The story of Vivian
Vivianus was borne by a fifth-century bishop of Saintes remembered for negotiating with the Visigoths on his city's behalf, and by several other early figures; the name spread through France and reached England with the Normans, where it was firmly a man's name. Alongside it, the Arthurian tradition carried a woman called Vivien or Niniane — the Lady of the Lake in some tellings, the one who imprisons Merlin in others — and the two spellings sat close enough to blur. Tennyson's Idylls of the King put Vivien in front of a very large Victorian readership, and within a generation the name was being given to daughters. In America it has been a girls' name for a century and is used for a small number of boys, which is the older tradition surviving quietly.
Meaning
alive, living
From the Latin vivus, alive, through the name Vivianus. Early Christians favored it for the obvious reason — it says something about the life they believed had been given, not about the child's temperament — and it belongs to the same word family as vivid, revive and survive.

The Leona test
Every popular name lives one long story — a climb, a peak, a slow settling back. Vivian's later chapters haven't been written yet, so we borrowed them: Leona climbed just as high around 1904, and its whole arc is on record. Line the two peaks up, and Leona's path sketches the road Vivian is walking now.
Vivian is on its second act. Revived names age gently: the generation that wore them first is far enough away that the name feels classic rather than dated.

The trade-off
- It has been in continuous use for more than fifteen hundred years, which almost no name in the American top hundred can claim.
- The meaning is one word, entirely positive, and impossible to mishear.
- The short forms cover three registers, from brisk to affectionate to minimal.
- Every European language has a form of it, so it travels without needing translation.
- Vivien and Vivienne are both standard elsewhere, and mail will arrive spelled all three ways.
- It has come back strongly after a long quiet stretch, so a girl may find others in her year even though her grandmother's generation had few.
- Nearly every child given this spelling now is a girl, so a boy named Vivian carries the older and more historically correct tradition against a very firm modern assumption — worth knowing before school begins rather than after.
