The story of Lucy
The root is Latin: lux, light, giving the Roman personal name Lucius and its feminine Lucia. Lucia was carried through Europe by the cult of Saint Lucy of Syracuse, a fourth-century martyr venerated as a patron of the blind, whose December feast is still marked with candles and processions in Italy and Scandinavia. Norman French brought the name to England as Lucie, which settled into the English spelling Lucy in the medieval period and has never gone out of use since. English Romantic poetry gave it a second life in the early nineteenth century, and the name traveled with English speakers to North America, Australia and New Zealand.
