Sadie
Feminine · “Princess”
Sadie is overwhelmingly a girls’ name — 149,681 girls against 241 boys since 1880.
Sadie began as a household nickname for Sarah and never went back — by the late nineteenth century it was being written on birth records in its own right, on both sides of the Atlantic. It is two syllables that open wide and land softly, SAY-dee, and it still charts in Scotland and Canada as well as here. Long enough on the American record to have been an old woman's name, a comic-strip name, a song title, and now a name in kindergartens again.

Where it comes from
From Sarai to Sadie
The story of Sadie
The root is the Hebrew name Sarah, borne in Genesis by Abraham's wife, who is called Sarai before the change. English speakers wore Sarah down into pet forms over centuries — Sally in one direction, Sadie in another — and by the nineteenth century Sadie was standing alone on documents rather than hiding behind a formal name. It traveled with emigrants to the United States, where it was widely used in Jewish and Irish American families, and it reached a wide audience in the twentieth century through the American comic strip Li'l Abner, whose Sadie Hawkins Day gave school dances their name. Songwriters kept it in circulation after that.

The Terri test
Every popular name lives one long story — a climb, a peak, a slow settling back. Sadie's later chapters haven't been written yet, so we borrowed them: Terri climbed just as high around 1959, and its whole arc is on record. Line the two peaks up, and Terri's path sketches the road Sadie is walking now.
Sadie is climbing fast right now. Steep climbs tend to come with steep descents — the quicker a name arrives, the more firmly it belongs to its moment.

The trade-off
- Spelled the way it sounds, and short enough that a child can write it early.
- Sarah stands behind it if a longer, more formal legal name is wanted, without changing the everyday name at all.
- Unbroken presence in American records since the earliest years of the data, so it reads as old rather than newly coined.
- Recognized in Scotland and Canada as well as the United States, so it travels without explanation in English-speaking countries.
- It is climbing steadily. A name that is uncommon in a classroom today may be considerably more familiar by the time she starts school.
- It began life as a nickname, and some ears still hear it that way — worth thinking about how it will sit on a résumé or a nameplate.
- Expect the occasional mix-up in writing with Sade, and the occasional person who reaches for Sarah instead.
