If you want a name that will never feel trendy and never feel dated — at sixty as at six — this shortlist is the safest ground in the entire dataset.
The bar is strict: top-100 in every decade since the 1950s — the 1950s through the 2020s so far, no exceptions and no near-misses. Seventeen names in the whole record clear it — and every one of them is still inside the top 100 today, which means the streak is alive, not historical.
The split is the most telling fact on this page: fifteen of the seventeen are boys' names, and only Elizabeth and Maria survive on the girls' side. Girls' naming in America simply turns over faster — the girls' top-100 rebuilds itself generation by generation, while James, William and Thomas hold their ground for seventy years at a stretch.
Timeless does not mean frozen. Michael was the #1 boys' name for thirty-eight consecutive years and now sits at #21; John opened the records at #1 in 1880 and stands at #23 today. These names drift within the top-100 — what they have never done, in seventy-five years, is leave it.
