Lucetta
Feminine · “light”
Lucetta is a small Lucy. The Italian ending -etta shrinks whatever it attaches to, and Lucia was already about as compact as a Latin name gets: a word for light with a name's ending on it. In Rome the name was given to children born at daybreak, which is about as literal as naming has ever been.

The story of Lucetta
Lucy of Syracuse, martyred in the persecutions of the early fourth century, carried the name into every Christian language, and the coincidence of her name with the word for light did the rest — her feast falls in the darkest part of December, and the association became inseparable. Sweden kept it most vividly: Saint Lucy's Day is still marked there with candles and a procession before dawn, in a country where December daylight is very short. Italian and English both produced diminutives of the name, and Lucetta is the Italian one. It reached American records in the nineteenth century alongside Lucinda, Lucretia and Luella, all of them variations on the same short Latin word.
Meaning
light
Latin lux, light, gives the adjective lucius and the names Lucius and Lucia. Roman sources connect the name directly to birth at first light, and it is one of the few classical name meanings that comes with an explanation attached rather than reconstructed afterward. The -etta ending is a diminutive and carries no sense of its own; it makes the name smaller and warmer without changing what it says.

Pronouncing Lucetta
loo-SET-uh
loo-SET-uh, three syllables, stress in the middle, the double t keeping the vowel short. Italian holds that double consonant audibly, loo-CHET-tah, with a soft c; English does not, and the name loses nothing by it.

The trade-off
- The meaning is one word, settled, and pleasant to explain in a sentence.
- Lucy and Etta are both waiting inside it and both are fully established names.
- It has a documented saint and a living festival behind it rather than a vague association.
- Lucetta, Lucretia and Lucinda all crowd the same opening, and the endings get swapped in speech and in writing.
- The -etta ending places the name in a much earlier American century, and it has not come back the way Lucy has.
- It will be shortened to Lucy by other people almost immediately, whether or not that is wanted.
