The story of Connie
Abstract virtues as names are older in Catholic Europe than the Puritan Faith and Prudence suggest — Constance, Clemence, Patience and Felicity were all in medieval use. Constance came to England with the Normans and stayed. Connie went independent in twentieth-century America and became far more common than any of its parents, which is the ordinary fate of a good short form. It goes to boys as well, where it usually stands for Conrad or Cornelius rather than for Constance.
Meaning
steadfastness
Latin constantia is built on constare, to stand together or stand firm, and it names the quality rather than a person who has it. Constantine is the masculine form and belonged to the emperor who legalized Christianity, which is how the whole family became widely used. Cornelia is a Roman gens name of unknown meaning, and Conrad is Germanic, bold counsel. Connie can shorten any of the three, and often shortened none of them.

The Beatrice test
Every popular name lives one long story — a climb, a peak, a slow settling back. Connie's later chapters haven't been written yet, so we borrowed them: Beatrice climbed just as high around 1910, and its whole arc is on record. Line the two peaks up, and Beatrice's path sketches the road Connie is walking now.

The trade-off
- Three long names are available behind it, in Latin, Roman and Germanic traditions.
- Two syllables, entirely unambiguous, and easy in any accent.
- The meaning of the main parent is a single clear virtue and pleasant to explain.
- It reads as a nickname on a document, and the long form has to be supplied by the family.
- The short form Con lands on an English word for a swindle, which is why it is rarely used.
- The name is very strongly associated with the mid twentieth century and dates a person closely.
