The story of Fabiola
Fabiola of Rome was a fourth-century Christian noblewoman who used her fortune to found a hospital in the city, taking in the sick from the streets herself; Jerome wrote her obituary and it survives. The name stayed in Italian and Spanish use and became internationally visible in the twentieth century through a Belgian queen born in Madrid. It reaches United States records with Mexican and Central American families in particular, where it has been steadily used.
Meaning
little Fabia — of the bean family
Latin Fabius is a gens name, derived by Roman writers themselves from faba, 'a broad bean'; the Fabii were said to have grown them. Fabia is the feminine and Fabiola its diminutive. The reading of the ending is certain and the bean derivation, while ancient, is the standard account rather than a proven one.

Every popular name lives one long story — a climb, a peak, a slow settling back. Fabiola's later chapters haven't been written yet, so we borrowed them: Sheilah climbed just as high around 1955, and its whole arc is on record. Line the two peaks up, and Sheilah's path sketches the road Fabiola is walking now.

The trade-off
- A documented Roman origin and a genuinely admirable historical bearer.
- Fabi and Ola are two ready short forms in different languages.
- Four syllables give it real formality, with everyday forms available underneath.
- Four syllables is long for daily use and the name will usually be shortened.
- Fabiola and Fabíola are both standard and the accent is dropped in American records.
- Its meaning is a bean, which is charming to some families and less so to others.
