From anastasis to Stacey
The story of Stacey
Anastasia was a major name in the Greek and Russian churches, carried by a martyr commemorated on Christmas Day, and it reached western Europe with the medieval saints' calendars. Eustace arrived separately, a Greek name carried by a Roman general in a legend involving a stag with a cross in its antlers. English shortened both to Stacy, which was in ordinary use as a masculine name into the twentieth century before shifting decisively to girls in the 1960s, when the -ey spelling took the top of the pair.

resurrection
Read as short for Anastasia, the meaning is the Greek anastasis, 'resurrection' — a name given in the early church to children born around Easter. Read as short for Eustace, it is the Greek eustachys, 'fruitful' or 'rich in grain'. Both derivations are well documented; which applies depends on the family.

Every popular name lives one long story — a climb, a peak, a slow settling back. Stacey's later chapters haven't been written yet, so we borrowed them: Diana climbed just as high around 1946, and its whole arc is on record. Line the two peaks up, and Diana's path sketches the road Stacey is walking now.
Stacey sits in the calm middle of the cycle — neither chasing a wave nor sliding off one. Middle-of-the-cycle names age slowly and predictably.
