The story of Nancy
What is remarkable about this name is that it outlived both of its parents. Agnes and Ann were the names it grew out of, and both were among the standard women's names of England for centuries; by the middle of the twentieth century Nancy was near the top of the American lists and both parents had faded almost to nothing. That is unusual. A pet form normally rises and falls with the name behind it, and when the parent goes out of fashion the short form follows. This one detached completely, took its own path, and is now the only member of the family most people could name.

Every popular name lives one long story — a climb, a peak, a slow settling back. Nancy's later chapters haven't been written yet, so we borrowed them: Virginia climbed just as high around 1921, and its whole arc is on record.
