Mazie
Feminine · “pearl”
Mazie belongs to the great cloud of pet names that grew up around Margaret and Mary, the kind that started at the kitchen table and ended up on birth certificates. It has been on American records from the earliest years such records were kept, quietly held by older generations, and it is being picked up again. Two syllables, an easy long A, and everyone who reads it says it right the first time.

The story of Mazie
The Scots shortened Mairead — their form of Margaret — to Maisie, and that spelling traveled into English print, most famously in Henry James's novel What Maisie Knew in 1897. Mazie is the phonetic American cousin of that spelling, written the way it sounds rather than the way Scotland spelled it. It appears in United States records from the very start of the national name statistics, alongside a whole generation of -ie names that families used in speech long before they used them formally. It held on steadily through the twentieth century, strongest among older generations, and has begun turning up again on newborns.

pearl, if traced through Margaret — but the line is not certain
Mazie is a pet form, and pet forms tend to have more than one parent. The strongest reading takes it through Maisie, the Scots diminutive of Mairead (the Gaelic Margaret), which goes back to Greek margarites, 'pearl'. But nineteenth-century American families also used Mazie and May as affectionate forms of Mary and of Mabel, and there is no way to sort out which household meant which.

Spellings are grouped by a fixed rule that folds interchangeable English spellings of one sound (ck/k, ph/f, x/ks, a non-initial y for i) and keeps vowels apart, so Sean and Shawn stay separate names. The trade-off
- Spelled the way it sounds: the z removes the guesswork that the Maisie spelling invites.
- On US records continuously since national statistics began — a long, unbroken line rather than a recent invention.
- Connects to the whole Margaret family, so Margaret, Marguerite or Margarita are available as a longer formal option.
- Short, two syllables, easy to say for a small child learning their own name.
- Rare enough day to day that a child is unlikely to share it with a classmate.
- Maisie is the better-known spelling in Britain and increasingly in the US, so expect to correct it — kindly and often — for life.
- It began as a nickname and still reads like one, which some families love and others solve by putting Margaret or Mary on the certificate and using Mazie at home.
- The sound sits close to the everyday words hazy and lazy, which schoolyards occasionally notice.
- It carries a strong vintage note and is still most common among the oldest generations, so for a while it may read as a great-grandmother's name rather than a newborn's.
