Bexley began as a patch of English woodland — a clearing where box trees grew — and its name is written down in a Kentish charter from the early ninth century. It is now a London borough, and also a leafy suburb of Columbus, Ohio, which is likely why the name has taken firmest hold in that state. In the mouth it is two crisp syllables with the same easy ending as Riley and Hadley, and it comes with a ready-made short form: Bex.

Where it comes from

The story of Bexley

Bexley is a place before it is a person. The spot in Kent appears in an early ninth-century charter as Bixle, describing a clearing where box trees grew; the settlement kept the name through Domesday and into the modern age, and is now a borough on the southeastern edge of London. English place names of this kind traveled as surnames, and then, in the American habit of turning surnames into first names, onto birth certificates. A second Bexley helped: the affluent Columbus suburb, named for the English original, which sits in the state where the given name is most used today.

The trade-off

Practical strengths
  • Spelled the way it sounds, and already familiar in print as a London borough and an Ohio suburb — few people will need it repeated twice.
  • Comes with Bex, a short form that has been in real use for generations through Rebecca, so it arrives ready-made.
  • Sits comfortably in the well-worn -ley group alongside Riley, Hadley and Finley, without duplicating any of them.
  • A documented written history stretching back to a ninth-century English charter.
What to consider
  • Almost anyone who hears Bex will assume Rebecca. That is easily corrected, but it will happen often enough to notice.
  • It reads to many ears as a place or a street name rather than a person's name — sometimes charming, sometimes something you explain.
  • Surname-style names like this one drift between boys and girls; in US records Bexley is used for girls, and a boy carrying it would be the unusual case.
  • The -ley and -leigh ending is crowded right now, so Bexley may be misheard as Bailey, Beckley or Everleigh in a noisy classroom.
