Harlene
Feminine
Harlene is a name built by a formula. Take a man's name beginning in Har-, add the -ene ending, and you have a woman's name that sounds like it has always existed. American naming used that formula heavily in one stretch of the twentieth century and produced Charlene, Earlene, Darlene, Jolene and Harlene the same way — a real manufacturing tradition, with real results.

The story of Harlene
The -ene and -een endings were productive in American naming for roughly two generations, which is to say they were available to attach to anything. Charlene came from Charles, Earlene from Earl, Marlene arrived from German by a different road and reinforced the pattern, and once the pattern was visible it generated names that had no single parent at all. Harlene sits in that group. What makes the family interesting rather than arbitrary is that it was doing something English had otherwise stopped doing: making women's names out of men's names systematically, the way Latin and Italian had always done. The suffix was new, the impulse was very old.
Meaningnot established
Not established
The ending is clear and the front is not. The -ene is a suffix, not a word, and carries no meaning at all. The first syllable could come from Harlan, from Harley, from Harold or from Harriet, and each of those has its own separate origin — a place name, a hare's meadow, a Germanic compound about armies, a Germanic compound about home. There is no way to recover which one any particular family had in mind, and the honest position is that this name's meaning is not established. Names built this way often do not have one.
Pronouncing Harlene
har-LEEN
har-LEEN, two syllables with the stress at the back and the ending fully sounded, exactly like Charlene and Darlene. The spelling is unambiguous about this, which is one of the advantages of the -ene ending over -ine or -yn.

The Irine test
Every popular name lives one long story — a climb, a peak, a slow settling back. Harlene's later chapters haven't been written yet, so we borrowed them: Irine climbed just as high around 1910, and its whole arc is on record. Line the two peaks up, and Irine's path sketches the road Harlene is walking now.
Harlene sits in the calm middle of the cycle — neither chasing a wave nor sliding off one. Middle-of-the-cycle names age slowly and predictably.

The trade-off
- It is written the way it is said, with no silent letters and no ambiguity about the ending.
- It belongs to a recognizable family of names, so it sounds familiar even to people who have never met one.
- Harley sits alongside it as a ready alternative if a shorter or less dated name is ever wanted.
- The meaning genuinely is not known, and a family that wants one to hand over will have to choose a story rather than find one.
- The -ene ending dates the name to a specific stretch of the twentieth century as clearly as a photograph would.
- Charlene and Darlene are so much better known that this will be heard as one of them and written as one of them.
