Anika
Feminine · “Either "grace”
Two separate histories arrive at this same five letters: one from Northern Europe, where Anna was affectionately lengthened to Annika, and one from Sanskrit, where Anika stands on its own. It is short enough to say across a playground and long enough to sound finished, with the open vowels that let it travel between languages without being reshaped.

The story of Anika
Anna was one of the most widely given names in Christian Europe, and Scandinavian and German speakers softened it into Annika, Anneke and Anke — the Swedish spelling Annika belongs to Pippi Longstocking's neighbor in Astrid Lindgren's books from the 1940s. The single-n Anika is the trimmer form of that line, and also the standard spelling of the separate Sanskrit name carried into English by Indian families. In the United States the two streams have simply merged at one spelling, which is why the name reads as at home in more than one community at once. Its American record begins in the mid-twentieth century and has stayed steady since, familiar without ever becoming crowded.

Either "grace, favor" through Anna, or Sanskrit "army" — also read as "splendor" and used as a title of the goddess Durga
On the Nordic and German road, Anika is a pet form of Anna, which goes back through Greek Hanna to Hebrew Hannah, "grace, favor". On the Indian road, Anika is a name in its own right, connected to Sanskrit anīka, "army, troop", and read in devotional use as "splendor" and as an epithet of Durga. Both readings are well established; which one applies depends on which family the name came through.

Pronouncing Anika
AH-nee-kah
Also widely said AN-ih-kuh in American English, with the stress up front and a flatter first vowel. Indian and Scandinavian families more often use the AH-nee-kah shape. Both are correct for this spelling; it helps to settle on one and repeat it.

The SSA counts spellings, not names. Anika went to 269 girls in 2025, but Annika, Aanika and Anica and the rest below are the same name said out loud. Together the 5 spellings went to 539, which makes it the 497th most-given girls’ name of the year — 458 places above the chart.
About 1 girl in 2,982 born in 2025 was given one of these spellings — against 1 in 5,975 for Anika itself.
Spellings are grouped by a fixed rule that folds interchangeable English spellings of one sound (ck/k, ph/f, x/ks, a non-initial y for i) and keeps vowels apart, so Sean and Shawn stay separate names. It errs towards splitting: a family here is never larger than the truth. SSA national data, 2025. Method

The Vernell test
Every popular name lives one long story — a climb, a peak, a slow settling back. Anika's later chapters haven't been written yet, so we borrowed them: Vernell climbed just as high around 1935, and its whole arc is on record. Line the two peaks up, and Vernell's path sketches the road Anika is walking now.
Anika sits in the calm middle of the cycle — neither chasing a wave nor sliding off one. Middle-of-the-cycle names age slowly and predictably.

The trade-off
- Reads and spells cleanly in English while also being a standard name in German, Swedish and Indian naming traditions.
- Two ready-made short forms, Ani and Nika, that come from opposite ends of the name.
- Close enough to the long-familiar Anna that most people register the spelling on first hearing.
- Common enough to be recognized, uncommon enough that a child is unlikely to share it with a classmate.
- Anika and Annika are both in use, so expect a lifetime of the double-n version turning up on forms and email lists. Worth deciding early whether you correct it or let it go.
- The two pronunciations — AH-nee-kah and AN-ih-kuh — are both legitimate, which means teachers and receptionists will guess, and sometimes guess the other one.
- Being the only Anika in a school is pleasant most days and tiring on the days someone asks where the name is from. A one-line answer, whichever road your family came by, saves a lot of repetition.
