Yasmin

Yasmin is overwhelmingly a girls’ name — 21,747 girls against 80 boys since 1880.
Yasmin is the jasmine flower, carried nearly unchanged out of Persian and into Arabic, Turkish and then Europe — the same word that gave English its jasmine and Spanish its jazmín. It has been on American records since the middle of the twentieth century, moving in a long, even line rather than a spike. Three syllables' worth of letters, two syllables' worth of sound.

The story of Yasmin
The word begins in Persian as yāsamīn, the name of the flower itself, and was taken into Arabic, where ياسمين serves as both the plant and a woman's name across the Arabic-speaking world. Turkish took it as Yasemin. The plant and its name traveled west together through Arabic into Spanish and Italian, reaching French as jasmin and English as jasmine in the sixteenth century — so the English flower name and Yasmin are the same word, arriving by different roads. Yasmin is the spelling that stays closest to the eastern original, and it came to the United States with families from the Middle East, North Africa and South Asia, as well as with parents who simply liked the flower.

Spellings are grouped by a fixed rule that folds interchangeable English spellings of one sound (ck/k, ph/f, x/ks, a non-initial y for i) and keeps vowels apart, so Sean and Shawn stay separate names. It errs towards splitting: a family here is never larger than the truth. SSA national data, 2025. Method

The Jeanine test
Every popular name lives one long story — a climb, a peak, a slow settling back. Yasmin's later chapters haven't been written yet, so we borrowed them: Jeanine climbed just as high around 1960, and its whole arc is on record. Line the two peaks up, and Jeanine's path sketches the road Yasmin is walking now.
Yasmin sits in the calm middle of the cycle — neither chasing a wave nor sliding off one. Middle-of-the-cycle names age slowly and predictably.

The trade-off
- Fully at home in Arabic, Persian, Turkish, French, English and Spanish-speaking settings, in one form or another — it needs no translation anywhere.
- A plain flower meaning that most people recognize instantly once you say the word jasmine.
- Short, phonetic and easy to read at first sight; no silent letters and no unexpected sounds.
- Established short forms already in use — Yas and Yaz — so a nickname does not have to be invented.
- A long, unbroken presence in American records across several generations, without a fashion peak that dates it.
- The spelling competes with Yasmeen, Yasmine, Yasmina, Jasmin and Jasmine. Expect to spell it aloud fairly often, and expect the occasional form to come back with an extra e.
- Stress is genuinely unsettled between YAZ-min and yaz-MEEN, so people will sometimes say it the other way and need a gentle correction.
- Yasmin is also the brand name of a widely marketed contraceptive pill. It rarely comes up in conversation, but it does turn up in search results.
- In most American classrooms a Yasmin will be the only one, which cuts both ways: no surname initial needed, but also little chance of hearing it said back by strangers who already know it.
