The name survived becoming an insult, which is not a small thing. For most of the twentieth century, calling a man a nancy in British English was a specific and unkind accusation, and the word was in wide use — and the name went on being given in enormous numbers throughout.

Where it comes from

The story of Nancy

What is remarkable about this name is that it outlived both of its parents. Agnes and Ann were the names it grew out of, and both were among the standard women's names of England for centuries; by the middle of the twentieth century Nancy was near the top of the American lists and both parents had faded almost to nothing. That is unusual. A pet form normally rises and falls with the name behind it, and when the parent goes out of fashion the short form follows. This one detached completely, took its own path, and is now the only member of the family most people could name.

Nancy sits in the rare tail. Its best year on record was 1938, with 91 boys. Today it is given to few enough children that it does not enter the ranked charts at all.

Rank is a position, a count is a headcount, and they move independently — a name can hold its rank while the number of babies behind it falls. Source: U.S. Social Security Administration.

Fashion outlook

Nancy sits outside the current charts, and that is its own kind of answer: naming cycles can only date the names they carried up. A name this rare has no decade stamped on it — it cannot go out of fashion, because it was never in.

The trade-off

Practical strengths
  • Everyone can spell it and say it on first hearing.
  • It has an unbroken run in American records from the first year they were kept.
  • Nan and Nance are ready short forms with quite different registers.
  • It is used in Spanish and French-speaking countries without adjustment.
What to consider
  • It is one of the most generation-marked names in the language and will place a person in time.
  • In British English the word has an old and unkind slang sense that has not entirely gone.
  • The spelling is recorded for a small number of boys, though it reads overwhelmingly as a girl's name.
