Randolph came to England with the Normans, who had it from Scandinavian settlers, and produced the surname Randall and the given names Randolph and Randal. Randy went independent in twentieth-century America and became very widely used. The complication is regional and it is not small: in British, Irish and Australian English randy is an ordinary adjective meaning sexually eager, in general everyday use, and it has been since the eighteenth century. Americans mostly do not know this and everyone else does immediately.
