The story of Ronald
Clan Donald has the name at its root twice over. Ranald and Ronald are both English spellings of the Gaelic Raghnall, itself the Norse name taken into Gaelic, and the branches of the clan called MacDonald and MacDonell trace to a Ranald whose descendants split. Formal documents, written in Latin, rendered every one of these as Reginald, so the same man could be Raghnall to his household and Reginaldus to a notary. Scotland kept Ronald as the everyday form. It traveled to America with Scottish and Irish emigration, climbed through the first half of the twentieth century to become one of the standard American men's names, and has been quietly declining since.
