Zayd
Masculine · Arabic roots · “growth”
Zayd is overwhelmingly a boys’ name — 4,890 boys against 5 girls since 1880.
Zayd is one of the oldest names still in ordinary use: an Arabic name built on a root meaning growth and increase, carried by figures of the earliest Islamic community and read aloud in mosques for fourteen centuries. In English it needs one breath and no explanation of how to say it — a single closed syllable, ZAYD, that lands like a door shutting. It has reached American records recently, and the arrival is a young one.
How old is the name Zayd?
Zayd first appears in US birth records in 1974 — 51 years ago. The typical Zayd is a kid of about 7 — this name's wave is very recent. About 4,800 people named Zayd are estimated to be alive in the US today.

The story of Zayd
Zayd (زيد) is Arabic, formed from the root z-y-d, which carries the sense of increase and abundance. It belongs to the first generation of Islamic history: Zayd ibn Harithah, the adopted son of Muhammad, and Zayd ibn Thabit, one of the scribes who recorded the Qur'an, both bore it, and Zayd ibn Ali gave his name to the Zaydi branch of Shia Islam. From Arabia the name traveled with Islam across North Africa, Persia, South Asia and eventually to Europe and the Americas, gathering transliterations as it went — Zaid in much of the Arab world and Pakistan, Zeyd in Turkish, Zayed in the Gulf. Its recent American appearance is not a new name but an old one arriving through immigration and through families choosing a name that works in two languages at once.

Spellings are grouped by a fixed rule that folds interchangeable English spellings of one sound (ck/k, ph/f, x/ks, a non-initial y for i) and keeps vowels apart, so Sean and Shawn stay separate names. The Krish test
Every popular name lives one long story — a climb, a peak, a slow settling back. Zayd's later chapters haven't been written yet, so we borrowed them: Krish climbed just as high around 2006, and its whole arc is on record. Line the two peaks up, and Krish's path sketches the road Zayd is walking now.

The trade-off
- One syllable, four letters, and phonetic in English — most people say it right on the first try.
- Works unchanged in Arabic, English, Urdu and Turkish contexts, which few short names manage.
- A documented record stretching back to the seventh century, so it is old rather than new despite its recent American arrival.
- Needs no nickname to be usable, but has an easy one in Zay if a child wants it.
- Zayd and Zaid are both in real use, so expect the spelling question at every appointment and enrollment. Neither is wrong; picking one and holding to it is the whole job.
- It sits close to Zane and Zayn, both far more familiar in American ears, and will occasionally be misheard as one of them over the phone.
- In most American schools a Zayd will be the only one, which some children enjoy and others find tiring in the early years of correcting adults.
