From Hrothgar in Old English to Roger
The story of Roger
The same two elements make the name of the old king in Beowulf. Hrothgar, who builds the great hall and then cannot hold it, is Roger in its Old English dress. English already had the name when the Normans arrived with their French version, Rogier, and took the incomers' form anyway, which is why Roger rather than Hrothgar is what survived into modern use. Then the word left home. In the signaling alphabet used before the current one, R stood for Roger, so a message acknowledged with the letter R came out of the mouth as roger, and the habit outlived the alphabet by decades. The Jolly Roger is older and murkier and probably unrelated. The English verb is best left unexplained at a christening. Very few first names have three separate entries waiting for them in the dictionary.
