Ignacio is the Spanish form of a Roman family name that has been in continuous use for something like two thousand years, carried first by early Christian bishops and later by the Basque soldier-turned-priest known in Spanish as Ignacio de Loyola, who founded the Jesuits in 1540. Four syllables, all of them open, with the stress landing on the second: eeg-NAH-syo. It has been shortened to Nacho for generations, which means the long name and the short one give a child two very different registers to move between.

Where it comes from

The story of Ignacio

The Roman gens Egnatia gave its name to the Via Egnatia, the road across the Balkans, long before any of this was a personal name in the modern sense. Once the spelling settled as Ignatius, it belonged first to the early Church: Ignatius of Antioch wrote his letters in the early second century, and the name stayed in ecclesiastical use for centuries afterward. It became widely popular in Spain and Spanish America after Ignacio de Loyola, the Basque founder of the Jesuits, whose order carried the name to Mexico, the Andes and the Philippines through its schools and missions. From there it traveled north with Spanish-speaking families into California, Texas and the Southwest, where the name is still most concentrated today.

Meaningscholars disagree

traditionally read as "fiery", from Latin ignis

The name descends from the Roman family name Egnatius, whose origin is not established — it is generally taken to be pre-Latin, possibly Etruscan. The spelling shifted to Ignatius in late antiquity under the influence of Latin ignis, "fire", and that is the reading you will see most often. So "fiery" is a real part of the name's history, but as an association acquired along the way rather than the original sense.

Pronouncing Ignacio

eeg-NAH-syo

Stress on the second syllable. In much of Spain the middle consonant is closer to eeg-NAH-thyo; in Latin America and the US it is a plain s or soft sh sound. English speakers who know only the written form sometimes try ig-NAY-shee-oh, which is worth heading off early.

The trade-off

Practical strengths
  • An unbroken written record from Roman antiquity to the present, so it is a traditional name rather than a recent coinage.
  • Recognizable across Spanish, Italian, Portuguese, Polish and French in closely related forms — useful in a bilingual or international family.
  • Ready-made short forms with long histories of their own: Nacho in Spanish, Iggy in English.
  • Spelled the way it sounds in Spanish, with no competing variant spellings to choose between.
What to consider
  • Nacho, the natural short form, is also the name of a snack food and of a 2006 comedy, an association English-speaking classmates will find quickly. Many families use it happily anyway; some reserve it for home.
  • In English-speaking settings expect the pronunciation to need correcting, and the -cio ending to be misread. In Spanish-speaking ones it needs no explanation at all.
  • Four syllables is a lot next to a short surname or a short middle name, so it is worth saying the whole thing aloud a few times.
