Wayne belongs to a small set of one-syllable surname names that arrived together, ran together and left together: Dale, Craig, Glenn, Dean, Kent, Wayne. They are flat, hard-edged and unfussy, they were everywhere for about thirty years, and they receded almost as a group. It is also the surname a comic-book writer chose for a millionaire in a cape, and he explained exactly where he got it.

Where it comes from
From The Old English word for a wagon to Wayne
The story of Wayne
The writer who created the character with the cape needed a name that sounded like old American money. He took the first from a Scottish king and the second from an American general, and said so plainly in interviews decades later: he wanted names that suggested a colonial-era family with a long pedigree, and the two he chose both belonged to men associated with independence movements. The choice worked so well that the surname is now more strongly attached to a fictional millionaire than to the general it came from. That is an unusual outcome for a name that was, at the time the character was invented, one of the most ordinary boys' names in America. The set it belonged to has since gone quiet, and this one is the first of them showing signs of coming back.
Meaning
wagon maker
The surname is occupational, from the Old English word for a wagon, and belonged to the man who built or drove them. The meaning is settled and it is unusually concrete for a name of this period: no virtue, no god, no abstraction, just a trade. What is worth adding is that occupational surnames were among the last kind to form and among the easiest to convert into first names, because nobody feels they belong to a particular family.
How the name formed
- The Old English word for a wagon
- A surname for the man who made them
- A first name in America through the twentieth century
- One of a set of short surname names that rose and fell together

The Francis test
Every popular name lives one long story — a climb, a peak, a slow settling back. Wayne's later chapters haven't been written yet, so we borrowed them: Francis climbed just as high around 1915, and its whole arc is on record. Line the two peaks up, and Francis's path sketches the road Wayne is walking now.
Wayne is on its second act. Revived names age gently: the generation that wore them first is far enough away that the name feels classic rather than dated.

The trade-off
- One syllable, no ambiguity, no spelling to explain, and no pronunciation to teach.
- It has a concrete working etymology, which most short names of its generation lack.
- It pairs cleanly with almost any longer middle name, which is what short first names are for.
- It is strongly associated with one American generation, and that association arrives before the child does.
- The spelling is on the register for girls as well, in very small numbers.
- There is no short form available, because there is nothing to shorten.
