Where each name comes from
Otis
Not established
The surname comes from a medieval given name, a form of the Norman Odo, and what that name meant before it was a name has not been recovered. The readings sometimes offered — wealth, or a Greek word about hearing — belong to other names entirely.
Odo → Otes → Otis
How it traveled
James Otis argued against the writs of assistance in a Boston courtroom, for five hours, and lost — but the argument that a general search warrant was illegal because a man's house is his castle went into the American constitutional tradition and eventually into the Fourth Amendment. John Adams, who was in the room, said the child independence was born there.
Wayne
wagon maker
The surname is occupational, from the Old English word for a wagon, and belonged to the man who built or drove them. The meaning is settled and it is unusually concrete for a name of this period: no virtue, no god, no abstraction, just a trade. What is worth adding is that occupational surnames were among the last kind to form and among the easiest to convert into first names, because nobody feels they belong to a particular family.
The Old English word for a wagon → A surname for the man who made them → A first name in America through the twentieth century → One of a set of short surname names that rose and fell together
How it traveled
The writer who created the character with the cape needed a name that sounded like old American money. He took the first from a Scottish king and the second from an American general, and said so plainly in interviews decades later: he wanted names that suggested a colonial-era family with a long pedigree, and the two he chose both belonged to men associated with independence movements.
Where a reading is contested the note says so — this page does not turn a guess into a fact. The chain is each name's recorded forms, oldest first; the story is its opening, told in full on the name's own page.
Out loud, and in short
Otis
OH-tis
Two syllables, stress at the front, ending in a soft s. Nothing in the spelling is ambiguous.
- Ote — The front alone, which is about all a two-syllable name this short allows.
- Oti — The name with its final consonant softened, a household form.
Wayne
WAYN
One syllable, with the vowel of rain. There is nothing to explain: the name is a single English word-shape that every speaker already knows, which is precisely what made the whole set of names it belongs to so easy to use.
- Way — Rare, and permanently at risk of being heard as the ordinary word.
- Dub — Built from the initial, and a distinctly Southern American habit.
- Waynie — Affectionate and family-scale, and it does not travel outside the household.

The trade-offs, name by name
Otis
Strengths
- It is short, warm and completely unambiguous in English.
- It has genuine American history behind it rather than an invented one.
- It has come back into fashion without ever becoming crowded.
To consider
- For many Americans the name means an elevator company before it means a person.
- The spelling is recorded for both sexes, though the boys hold nearly all of it.
- No meaning can honestly be handed to a child with it.
Wayne
Strengths
- One syllable, no ambiguity, no spelling to explain, and no pronunciation to teach.
- It has a concrete working etymology, which most short names of its generation lack.
- It pairs cleanly with almost any longer middle name, which is what short first names are for.
To consider
- It is strongly associated with one American generation, and that association arrives before the child does.
- The spelling is on the register for girls as well, in very small numbers.
- There is no short form available, because there is nothing to shorten.
