The story of Terry
Terentius was a Roman clan name, borne most famously by the comic playwright Terence in the second century BC, and it survived into English as Terence and Terrence. Separately, the Normans brought Thierry to England, where it wore down to Terry and became a common surname; Irish families later used Terence to stand in for the older name Toirdhealbhach. By the nineteenth century Terry was doing all this work at once — a surname, a nickname for Terence, a nickname for Theresa — and then it did what many nicknames do and set up on its own as a given name. In the United States it settled overwhelmingly on the boys' side while staying available to the girls', which is why both are still out there.

Terry reaches English by two roads. As the English form of the Norman name Thierry — the same name as Germanic Theodoric — it carries the elements for 'people' and 'ruler'. As a short form of Terence, it goes back to the Latin family name Terentius, and scholars have never settled what that name originally meant. Neither reading cancels the other; both are genuinely part of the name's history.
