Two syllables, both open, both easy in English and Spanish alike. It has been on US records for over a century, though its real wave is very recent — the kind of name a class roster is only now getting used to.

The story of Santi
The road to Santi runs through Santiago, which began as the Spanish run-together of Sant Iago — Saint James, the apostle whose tomb at Santiago de Compostela became one of medieval Europe's great pilgrimage destinations. The name spread through Spain, Portugal and later Latin America, and in ordinary speech it was clipped: Santi at home, Santiago on the paperwork. Italian took a parallel route from the same Latin root, giving Santo and Santino, with Santi long established there as both a short form and a surname. In the United States it has been recorded since the early twentieth century, arriving with Spanish-speaking families, and has only lately begun to be given on its own rather than as an affectionate shortening.
Meaning
saint, holy
Santi carries the sant- element of Santiago (Spanish Sant Iago, "Saint James") and of Italian Santino and Santo — all from Latin sanctus, "holy, consecrated." The second half of Santiago belongs to Jacob/James, so the full name means the saint himself; the short form keeps the "saint" part.

Spellings are grouped by a fixed rule that folds interchangeable English spellings of one sound (ck/k, ph/f, x/ks, a non-initial y for i) and keeps vowels apart, so Sean and Shawn stay separate names. The Peggy test
Every popular name lives one long story — a climb, a peak, a slow settling back. Santi's later chapters haven't been written yet, so we borrowed them: Peggy climbed just as high around 1936, and its whole arc is on record. The trade-off
- Spelled exactly as it sounds in both English and Spanish — five letters, no silent parts, nothing to dictate twice.
- Backed by Santiago, an internationally familiar formal name, so a child can move between the short and long versions for life.
- Recognized across Spanish-, Catalan- and Italian-speaking families, which makes it travel well between languages.
- Two open syllables that sit easily beside most surnames and are simple for a small child to say early.
- Because Santi is the classic nickname for Santiago, people will often assume there is a longer name behind it and ask. Some parents register Santiago and use Santi daily to keep both doors open.
- The sound sits close to Santa, and somebody will make the Christmas joke — usually once, usually in December.
- It is still rare enough in the US that a Santi will likely be the only one around, which means occasional mishearings as Sandy or Sonny and a bit of gentle correcting.
