Tiago
Masculine · “Portuguese form of Jacob/James”
Tiago comes from one of the oldest names still in daily use: it is the Portuguese form of the name English speakers know as James. It reached that shape by a happy accident of speech — pilgrims saying Santiago, the shrine of Saint James in Galicia, split the word in the wrong place, and San Tiago left Tiago standing on its own. Two open vowels and a soft landing, said easily in Portuguese, Spanish, French and English alike.
How old is the name Tiago?
Tiago first appears in US birth records in 1982 — 43 years ago. The typical Tiago is a kid of about 9 — this name's wave is very recent. About 3,200 people named Tiago are estimated to be alive in the US today.

Where it comes from
From Ya'aqov to Tiago
The story of Tiago
The Hebrew Ya'aqov passed into Greek as Iakobos and into Latin as Iacobus, which softened in medieval Iberia to Iago. From the ninth century onward, the shrine of Saint James at Compostela in Galicia drew pilgrims from across Europe, and the cry of Sant Iago traveled with them; in Portuguese the boundary between the two words shifted, and Tiago emerged as a name in its own right. Diego and Santiago grew from the same devotion in Spanish. Tiago has been standard in Portugal and Brazil for generations, and reached the United States with Portuguese- and Spanish-speaking families — its strongest footholds here are the states where those communities are largest, and it also charts in France.

Portuguese form of Jacob/James, from Hebrew Ya'aqov
The Hebrew name Ya'aqov has two long-standing readings: 'heel' or 'holder of the heel', taken as 'supplanter' in the Genesis narrative, and 'may God protect', from a fuller theophoric form. Scholars still argue it; the link from Ya'aqov through Greek Iakobos and Latin Iacobus to Iago and Tiago is not in dispute.

Pronouncing Tiago
tee-AH-go
European and Brazilian Portuguese generally give the first syllable a 'ch' sound — chee-AH-goo — while Spanish and American English speakers say tee-AH-go. Both are correct in their own settings, so it is worth deciding early which one you will correct people toward.

The Philippe test
Every popular name lives one long story — a climb, a peak, a slow settling back. Tiago's later chapters haven't been written yet, so we borrowed them: Philippe climbed just as high around 1964, and its whole arc is on record. Line the two peaks up, and Philippe's path sketches the road Tiago is walking now.

The trade-off
- Spelled the way it is said in English, with no silent letters and no ambiguity about where the stress falls.
- Works unchanged across Portuguese, Spanish, French and English, which matters for a family that crosses borders or languages.
- Sits inside a large, familiar family of names — James, Santiago, Diego, Giacomo — so it is never entirely unexplainable.
- Short enough to need no nickname, while Ti and Tiaguinho are both in real use if one is wanted.
- Thiago, with an h, is the more common spelling in the United States, so a Tiago will spend a lifetime saying 'no h' — a small, permanent piece of admin rather than a problem.
- The Portuguese chee- and the Spanish tee- openings are both authentic, and people will offer you whichever they learned first. Families often settle on one at home and let the other pass outside it.
- Many people will hear it as a shortening of Santiago rather than a name of its own, which it has been in Portuguese for centuries.
- Its wave in this country is a recent one, so most people who have met a Tiago have met a child.
