Names far more common than their rank admits

78 names · 50 girls · 28 boys · records through 2025

The official records count spellings, not names. Jaxon and Jackson are two separate rows in the data and one name on a playground, which means a rank can badly understate how often a child will meet their own name.

This guide has 78 names: 50 girl names and 28 boy names. Names ranked #101–1000 whose combined spelling family ranks inside the top 100, ordered by the family's rank. Built from US Social Security birth records through 2025. Tap + beside any name to keep it on your shortlist as you read.

Before the names

This page corrects for that. Every name below sits outside the top 100 on its own spelling while the combined family it belongs to ranks inside it — 107 names in the current data are in that position, and the gaps are large: Jaxon ranks #115 as spelled and #8 as a sound, Elliana #139 and #4.

The note beside each name carries both numbers: the spelling's rank, and the family's. The distance between them is how much company the rank is hiding.

It is the single most useful check to run before choosing a name that looks rarer than it sounds.

Every rank and count here is published by the US Social Security Administration and refreshed each year when the new figures land. The method is stated at the top of this page.
