Dominik
Masculine · “Of the Lord”
Dominik is overwhelmingly a boys’ name — 10,242 boys against 95 girls since 1880.
Dominik is the Latin word for "of the Lord" carried through a dozen European languages and out the other side, still spelled the way most of Central Europe spells it. For centuries in Catholic Europe it was the name given to children born on a Sunday — dies Dominica, the Lord's day. Three syllables, stress at the front, and it ends on a clean consonant that no language it has passed through has ever softened.

The story of Dominik
The name begins as Latin Dominicus, an adjective before it was ever a name, and it spread across medieval Christian Europe partly through the Sunday custom and partly through the thirteenth-century Order of Preachers, whose founder bore the Spanish form Domingo. Each language kept the root and reshaped the ending: Domenico in Italy, Domingos in Portugal, Dominique in France, Dominik with a k across Poland, Czechia, Slovakia, Hungary, Croatia and the German-speaking lands. That k-spelling reached the United States with Central and Eastern European migration in the early twentieth century and has been on the American record ever since, never scarce, never a craze. It sits alongside the English Dominic rather than replacing it — the same name, two passports.

The SSA counts spellings, not names. Dominik went to 232 boys in 2025, but Dominic and Dominick are the same name said out loud. Together the 4 spellings went to 3,963, which makes it the 86th most-given boys’ name of the year — 898 places above the chart.

About 1 boy in 431 born in 2025 was given one of these spellings — against 1 in 7,362 for Dominik itself.
Spellings are grouped by a fixed rule that folds interchangeable English spellings of one sound (ck/k, ph/f, x/ks, a non-initial y for i) and keeps vowels apart, so Sean and Shawn stay separate names. It errs towards splitting: a family here is never larger than the truth. SSA national data, 2025. Method

The Marcel test
Every popular name lives one long story — a climb, a peak, a slow settling back. Dominik's later chapters haven't been written yet, so we borrowed them: Marcel climbed just as high around 1925, and its whole arc is on record. Line the two peaks up, and Marcel's path sketches the road Dominik is walking now.
Dominik sits in the calm middle of the cycle — neither chasing a wave nor sliding off one. Middle-of-the-cycle names age slowly and predictably.

The trade-off
- The meaning is unambiguous and easy to explain: Latin dominicus, "of the Lord" — one of the few names where nothing is in dispute.
- Works in Polish, Czech, Slovak, Hungarian, German, Croatian and English without alteration, which matters in families spanning two countries.
- Two ready-made short forms already in real use, Dom and Nik, pulled from opposite ends of the name.
- Spelled the way it sounds, and the sister spelling Dominic is familiar enough in the US that no one will find the name itself strange.
- On the American record for over a century, with no boom-and-bust curve behind it.
- The k will be questioned for life. Americans default to Dominic, so expect "with a c or a k?" at every appointment, and expect forms to come back wrong sometimes.
- The French form Dominique is given to women as well as men, so anyone reading across languages may pause before assuming. The k-spelling itself is consistently masculine.
- It is familiar without being crowded — recognized instantly, yet a Dominik is unlikely to share a classroom with another. That cuts both ways, depending on whether you want the name explained or the name known.
