Elianna is the fuller-spelled cousin of Eliana, a name that reaches English from two directions at once — Hebrew scripture on one side, Roman Latin on the other. Said aloud it is four unhurried syllables that hold two very familiar names inside it, Ella and Anna, which is part of why it sounds settled even to people meeting it for the first time. In American records it is a recent arrival, and it has been climbing steadily since.

How old is the name Elianna?

Where it comes from

The story of Elianna

The Hebrew line builds the name from two of the oldest pieces of the language, El for God and the verb meaning to answer, following the same pattern as older names of thanksgiving. The Latin line runs separately: Aeliana, the feminine of Aelianus, gave Italian, Spanish and Portuguese their Eliana and French its Éliane, which is why the name has long felt at home in the Mediterranean without any Hebrew connection at all. English speakers met the name mainly through the shorter Eliana, and the Elianna spelling followed the well-worn English habit of doubling the n — the same habit that gives us Hannah beside Anna, and Julianna and Arianna beside Juliana and Ariana. It appeared in American records only in the late twentieth century and has been rising since.

"My God has answered" (Hebrew), or a feminine form of the Roman family name Aelius

Two serious readings sit behind Eliana and its Elianna spelling. The Hebrew one joins El, "God," with a form of the verb anah, "to answer" — hence "my God has answered." The Romance one traces back to Aeliana, feminine of the Latin Aelianus, from the Roman gens Aelius, whose own meaning is not settled. Both lines are genuine; the double-n spelling tends to travel with the Hebrew reading.

Pronouncing Elianna

el-ee-AH-nuh

Four syllables with the stress on the third. Some families begin it ee-lee- rather than el-ee-, and a minority say the third syllable as -ANN- instead of -AH-. All are in real use, so it helps to pick one and say it first when introducing her.

The SSA counts spellings, not names. Elianna went to 1,404 girls in 2025, but Eliana, Elliana and Ellianna and the rest below are the same name said out loud. Together the 21 spellings went to 13,006, which makes it the 4th most-given girls’ name of the year — 214 places above the chart.

and 13 rarer spellings.

About 1 girl in 124 born in 2025 was given one of these spellings — against 1 in 1,145 for Elianna itself.

Spellings are grouped by a fixed rule that folds interchangeable English spellings of one sound (ck/k, ph/f, x/ks, a non-initial y for i) and keeps vowels apart, so Sean and Shawn stay separate names. It errs towards splitting: a family here is never larger than the truth. SSA national data, 2025. Method

The trade-off

Practical strengths
  • Built from parts English speakers already know — Ella, Ellie and Anna are all inside it — so it is easy to hear and easy to repeat.
  • Works across languages: Eliana in Italian, Spanish, Portuguese and Hebrew, Éliane in French, all recognizable as the same name.
  • Several established short forms already in circulation, from Ellie to Anna, so she has options without anyone inventing one.
  • The doubled n follows a pattern English already uses in Hannah, Julianna and Arianna, so the spelling has precedent behind it.
What to consider
  • The spelling will need repeating. Eliana, Elliana, Eleanna and Aliana are all in use, and most people default to the single-n Eliana unless told otherwise.
  • The opening syllable and the stressed vowel both vary in real speech, so she may hear two or three versions of her own name before she's old enough to correct them.
  • It is on a clear upward path, which means it is likely to feel more familiar in a decade than it does now — less rare, though not the sort of name that arrives in every classroom.
  • Ellie, the most natural short form, is shared with a whole crowd of Ella, Eleanor and Elena names, so it won't be distinctive on the playground the way the full name is.
