Elliana
Feminine
Elliana is the doubled-L American spelling of Eliana, a name that reaches English along two old roads — one Hebrew, one Latin — and arrived here with four open vowels and a soft landing. Say it and it falls into four syllables that never quite close: el-ee-AH-nuh. It also arrives with two short forms already waiting in it, Ellie and Ella, both of which have long lives of their own.

Where it comes from
From Aelianus to Elliana
The story of Elliana
Eliana existed independently in two places: in Hebrew, built from the words for God and for answering, and in the Romance languages as the feminine of Aeliano, from the Roman name Aelianus. Both forms traveled into English use, which is why dictionaries offer two meanings without contradiction. The Elliana spelling, with the second L, is a recent American variant — it appears in US records only in the last few decades, and it pulls the name visually toward the already-familiar Ella and Ellie. Its bearers are, as a group, still very young: this is a name whose whole story in English is being written now.

"God has answered me" (Hebrew) or "sun" (Latin)
Two separate names have long shared this shape. The Hebrew Eliana reads as "God has answered me" (from the elements for God and for answering). The Italian, Spanish and Portuguese Eliana descends instead from the Roman family name Aelianus, itself usually connected to Helios, the sun. Neither reading has pushed the other out, and Elliana inherits both.

The SSA counts spellings, not names. Elliana went to 2,099 girls in 2025, but Eliana, Elianna and Ellianna and the rest below are the same name said out loud. Together the 21 spellings went to 13,006, which makes it the 4th most-given girls’ name of the year — 135 places above the chart.

About 1 girl in 124 born in 2025 was given one of these spellings — against 1 in 766 for Elliana itself.
Spellings are grouped by a fixed rule that folds interchangeable English spellings of one sound (ck/k, ph/f, x/ks, a non-initial y for i) and keeps vowels apart, so Sean and Shawn stay separate names. It errs towards splitting: a family here is never larger than the truth. SSA national data, 2025. Method

The Kelli test
Every popular name lives one long story — a climb, a peak, a slow settling back. Elliana's later chapters haven't been written yet, so we borrowed them: Kelli climbed just as high around 1969, and its whole arc is on record. Line the two peaks up, and Kelli's path sketches the road Elliana is walking now.
Elliana sits in the calm middle of the cycle — neither chasing a wave nor sliding off one. Middle-of-the-cycle names age slowly and predictably.

The trade-off
- Comes with short forms already in independent use — Ellie, Ella, Elle — so the everyday name needs no inventing.
- Works in Italian, Spanish, Portuguese and Hebrew in the closely related Eliana form, which travels without translation.
- Reads phonetically on a first pass; most English speakers will attempt it correctly even if they need the stress confirmed.
- Sits inside a large, familiar family of names — Ella, Elena, Eliana, Liana — so it is recognizable without being repeated.
- The spelling will need repeating. Eliana, Elliana, Iliana and Eleana all circulate, and the single-L version is the older and better-known one, so expect to spell it out at the pharmacy and the school office.
- Two pronunciations are both in real use — el-ee-AH-nuh and el-ee-AN-uh. Worth deciding which one you want before the birth announcement.
- Ellie is shared with Elizabeth, Eleanor, Elena and many others. A child may be the only Elliana in the building and still be one of several Ellies.
- Almost everyone carrying this spelling is a child or young adult, so it reads clearly as a name of the present moment rather than an inherited one.
